I'm interested to know how sales are going overall. We hear a lot of moaning in the media about how the economy stinks and the world is ending, but many people are telling me that sales are up this year.

Some cursory research indicates that traffic counts might be down, but ticket averages are up.

What are you all seeing?

Where's the "too soon to tell" option? This is my first summer open.

At the Planet Smoothie store I manage sales are about the same as last year this time. 3 of the first six months have been up from last year and 3 down. The store has been open 3 years and year 2 and 3 saw about 20% increase from previous years. This year is flat, even with the LSM I do.  WTF

How is the customer count? I've noticed a lot of places holding steady in terms of sales, but their customer counts are way off (and ticket average is up - a possible indication that your loyal fan base has consolidated their spending to you).

I think the important measurement for the time being is customer count. Now is a good time to grab market share, 'cause some competitors won't be around this time next year.
